TBC Crashing Frequently

Does anyone else experience a high amount of crashes with TBC? Frequently when I zoom in or out on projects in TBC it will encounter an error and crash causing me to lose work that I have completed. My system is very high end with 128GB of Ram and an RTX 5080 graphics card. The error occurs even on basic projects where I am doing a takeoff and it is just PDF’s and some drawn linework. I’m becoming very frustrated with the frequency of having to redo work. Hoping someone here has some suggestions.

try doing a clean install but clean up old versions Trimble Cleanup Utility - Do you have past versions of TBC on your computer?

Unfortunately, there is a long hairy list of reasons why this could be the case (in my experience anyway).

The settings that made the most impact for me are:

  • Run projects locally on your machine when active, then ‘save as’ to your long term storage option. Like a check in/ check out workflow.

  • Per Gavin’s advice, follow those settings, and there’s several threads on here about how to setup your NVIDIA settings, and some TBC settings. Note* TBC doesn’t like 4K monitors, but it will run on a 4K monitor in 1440p just fine.

  • There’s several Youtube videos on how to turn off native microsoft features that run in the background that crush your CPU and RAM. most notably Turn Off Search Indexing. I do not condone all of these ‘tips’ in this link, but this gives a general idea of some things to try. Use at your own risk** 14 Proven Fixes to Make Windows 11 Lightning Fast | PCMag

I would also do the following Adam

  1. Make sure your Graphics Driver is up to date

  2. Make sure your Windows is up to date

  3. Install any Bios or System Driver updates provided by your PC manufacturer

  4. Try running TBC in OpenGL mode vs DirectX (Support - Options - Advanvced)

  5. Make sure your Graphics Card is configured correctly for Windows - (Graphics Driver Settings, Add TBC as an application and set it to use your high end card for its use vs Intel / let windows decide

  6. If it is still crashing I would deinstall TBC, run Cleanup Utility and reinstall clean - it is possible that something else you have installed interfered with shared components that TBC uses and that has creayted the instabilitry.

  7. If you are using any Drive products like One Drive, Google Drive, Box, Drop Box, Egnyte etc. make sure you turn off active synching while working with TBC

  8. If you are working on a Network or using backup NAS Drives, make sure that while working you are working on the local PC hardware not off the NAS Drive itself

There are likely other potential sources of instability, but these are the ones that we encounter most of the time.

I am not sure that I agree with the comments that TBC doesnt work with 4K monitors - I am running 4K monitors and higher just fine with TBC - if that is not working right for someone, then we should chat through your setup and why you think TBC is not working with 4K so we can get that sorted out with your PC.

If none of the above help, let me know what type of PC you are running, there are some issues out there on eg Alienware computers that have created unique issues, and I am sure that there are others out there, but TBC 2025.12 is pretty stable as far as my use goes at least, I have not seen any major issues - so I think your problem is localized to your computer and your setup.
