Why is the utility surface creating triangles outside the trench? is this due to Null template problem in 5.6

numerous manholes along the pipe run about 36, what I want to achieve is the trench volume between each manhole, but currently, the volume is for the entire length

Some areas are directionally drilled, so I add a blank template (as I don’t want the volumes for those areas)
