TBC and PC Specification Overview

Super helpful, thank you for the info!

I had one experience like 10 years ago where I bought the best “gaming card” at the time and it was horrendous with the 3D view in Terramodel. Since then, I have always used Quadro cards. Wasn’t sure if things had changed for gaming cards since then.

I’ve heard that the new RTX 5000 series is right around the corner…I may hold out for that.

If I had to buy an overkill prebuilt TBC computer for today running dual 4k monitors with a good budget:

or

If I had to go dell/alienware I’d spec my desktop like this, but i’d prefer buying from cyberpower:

I’d perfer 64gb ram these days but 32 still works fine. Both of these cyberpower PCs are upgradeable later on too by a 3rd party local PC shop if you dont feel comfortable doing it.

If i could spec a PC out i’d change it up…

If my company would let me build or spec a PC for my use case i’d run a liquid cooled intel 12900k, a 3070/3080 gpu, and 64 GB of the fastest ram i could find in a Lian Li or Fractal Case with one or two samsung evo 970, 980, or 990 m.2 NVME SSD drives in the 2-4TB range with 2-3 “old school” Hard drives for deep storage on older projects and I’d back that up with some type of cloud storage on top of it all.

The graphics card really isnt pushed hard in TBC even at 4k unless you overlay pdfs onto surfaces. I’m running a quadro rtx 4000 and a 10th gen intel CPU, the cpu takes infinitely longer to process things and is much more commonly pegged at 100% than the GPU even on large 200+ acre sites with 15-30 pdfs. That said, a 3080 series card would likely be adequate and most likely overkill for TBC with most users.

Quadro cards are designed and intended to process 3d renderings not basic CAD data like we use. TBC doesnt really care about anything other than a fast single core CPU clock speed so a gaming PC is perfectly paired for TBC at a huge cost savings over a “workstation”.
