True Type vs Stroke Type Fonts

Are there still any major issues in using True Type Fonts in TBC? Years ago when there was a major scaling issue when printing to PDF with True Type fonts in the sheet, we converted all of our text to Stroke Type. The trouble is, everyone seems to not like RomanS (which seemed to be the cleanest of the very limited selection). We’re starting to do a bit more outsourced drafting for clients who don’t do it in house, so we’re trying to set things up how they like them. I just hoping we’re not going to run into any issues like there were previously. Is there still a major TBC lag when using True Type fonts as well?

Thank you!

Katie

The problems with Plotting using True Types are long behind us I think - you should have no issues with that in the latest TBC Versions.

However TBC does struggle Graphically when there is a “LOT” of True Type Text items in a project when they are turned on graphically. Converting them to Stroke Fonts removes the Graphics Regen Lags when that starts to happen, This is why in the RPS Text Style Manager we allow you to define a True Type and a Stroke Font Definition for all Text Styles, so that when you are Modeling you can set all the text styles through Text Style Manager to use Stroke Fonts, and then later when you are trying to produce final drawings you can switch them back to Stroke Fonts quickly.

The only downsides of this approach is that the Stroke Foints and True Types are going to be slightly differemt in terms of the character widths and spacings, so the space that one fills may be different to the space filled by the other, however you can also mitigate that using Match Width in our Text Style Manager so that the Width of the Stroke Font and Spacing closely matches that of the True Type Font.

I personally would maybe be a little selective abouit when I use True Types vs Stroke Fonts - the TMODELF Font is pretty good as a stroke font (Ex Terramodel Stroke Font) and I would maybe use that for mass labeling of things like Spot Elevations and hold the True Types back for Street Names, Text Notes, Legends, Data Tables Cut Fill Maps etc. so as to keep the True Type Text to the minimum needed to produce high quality drawings, but you can still use the override to switch them back to True Types for printing purposes.

Note also that Cad Cleanup in Step 2 allows you to switch all True Types over to Stroke Fonts in a single step, we probably should allow the conversion of all Stroikes back to True Type in the same way - I will have one of my team look at that

Hope this helps

Alan
