Surface Thickness

I got a creek bed and bank that need rip rap. I have the finish grade designed but I need to create a SG for the surface and it needs to be a thickness not a vertical offset. I tried using MSI manager and I edited the site improvement to create a thickness but it is still creating a vertical offset surface when I use the create subgrade command. Any idea on what I am doing wrong!?

In the MSI Manager, do you have the Subgrade Adjustment Basis for your rip rap set to “By perpendicular offset”, not “By vertical offset”?

Yes, I did set the offset to thickness. Thats what is bugging me.

Changing that setting typically works for me. I just created a 3:1 slope to test this out, and put a line down the middle to allow 2 separate site improvements to be side by side. The left side had the perpendicular setting, and the right had the vertical setting in the MSI manager. My cut-fill map is different with the 2 separate areas and seems to be correctly adjusted to the thickness on the perpendicular site improvement.

You know what, I think I was expecting a different result… I was hoping it would created the SG surface offset perpendicular to the linestrings creating the top surface. I see know what it is doing. I guess I will have to comp what the bottom stringlines to create what I want.

Thank you,

Can you just the - Cloud Services - Create Perpendicular Surface Offset?

Edit:

That is what I was looking for! I will give it a try!

Erik,

I used this command and I think it does a pretty good job. However, it does seem to do a few funny things I either don’t understand or is not quite right.

First I had a unusual shape and it had a hard time with it. It got me close enough and with a few tweaks I think it will serve its purpose.

The second surface was much cleaner by design but when it created the new surface, to toe of the new surface was not straight

like the toe of the design. I will attach the vcl file for you to remove.

Could @nelsonhays calculator possibly help? It’s just offsetting of the current lines.

I made that spreadsheet to calculate the offset for individual nodes in a corridor template since many typical sections for walls, riverbanks, seawalls, etc don’t have a consistent thickness all the way across the whole section.

If you share your typical section of what you’re trying to build/quantify, we may be able to propose other solutions.
