Merge Points - Tips and Tricks

Does anyone have experience with the merge points? Tried using this but doesn’t seem to work when you select a bunch of points. You have to individual go in an select the points you want to keep.

I want something simpler so if we have asbuilt data I can merge all duplicates together and reduce clutter in my project.

Is there not a command for clean up of duplicate points in RPS?

Nor today there isn’t but it could be added to remove duplicates I am sure

That would be very useful. The amount of redundant points on a project gets pretty intense, especially when you have multiple below on a site and you have to share work order data.

I would say that if we do this, there also needs to be a way to recognize that there is a linestring associated to these points and change this from point ID to coordinate. That way you don’t lose your linework inadvertently when cleaning up the points. Or there may even be a smart way of doing this.

@alan.sharp Has anything ever been added to address this issue? I am running into the the same issue with a bloated project file. It seems like “Remove Duplicates” only applies to text.

Our remove Duplicates only works currently for Text items, TBC Project Cleanup will remove Duplicate Lines, but for Points I don’t have a quick answer - not a hard tool to write for Points only - point clouds are a different beast

I tried the Merge Points command but that did not work although it seems to identify all the duplicate points no problem

I am going to email you with a suggestion as to how to do this

This would be very helpful because as a project progress, it is easy to get redundant points stacked.

I know this is an old thread but when you are in the merge points command and say select all points in a project. You can do by distance of say .05 ft whatever your tolerance is and it will then group all duplicate points into a tree and you can manage it that way. I run into this all the time when getting data prepped for a least squares adjustment. Watch the TOPO or their shots I usually have already placed those on a layer and turned them off.
