Using IRI Roughness Index Report to QA Paving Surface Models

We have recently had a number of people asking about the use of IRI (International Roughness Index) report to QA / QC corridor models for road pavement surfaces that will be paved using automated 3D paving systems for concrete or asphalt surfaces.

I would like to “Shout Out” to Jeff Robinson of Ajax Paving - he is my resident guru on paving operations - he has a major influence over the development of Trimble Paver Control systems and is a great industry advocate for automated machine control for concrete and asphalt paving operations.

The IRI Roughness Index report analyzes either .PAV files from machines that can be analyzed post paving operations or 3D alignments created from 3D linestrings generated as an output from a corridor model using the explode command.

The reports generated using this process are comparable to the Ride Quality reports that can be generated by the US ProVal software provided to the US construction industry by the Federal Highway Agency.

In the video below we show you how to set up your corridor models and how best to model the pavement surfaces in order to achieve good IRI values on the model strings that represent pavement lane edges etc.
