I am using the takeoff module within TBC and I want to bring in a drone topo surface and use that as original ground for the takeoff.
Is there a way to add the surface as part of one of the categories or do I need to create 3D data out of the surface and then categorize that to the original layer to then rebuild the surface?
Really what I’m trying to do is take a surface export from a drone flight and strip existing asphalt in order to calc dirt quantities.
Just add it as a surface member for Original ground. You do have to have some sort of layer under original ground but nothing has to be on it.

Other case you can do is use the explode surface command and then add the resulting layer to the existing surface members.
Thanks for the quick response! Doesn’t seem like adding as a surface member works. Exploding the surface does, but I’d ideally like to be able to add the surface as is as a member. Below is a video of my attempt at adding the surface as a surface member with no luck:
I did not see you hit Rebuild Surfaces after adding Surface Member - it is a takeoff Surface and only gets rebuilt when you use the rebiuild Takeoff Surfaces.
Adding a TIN Model works for sure, if the TIN Model is made from a point cloud maybe that has an issue - I will check. You can also just add the point Cloud Region to the Original ground surface.
Just remember to Rebuild Takeoff Surfaces afterwards
As Erik said - you have to have at least one layer categorized as Original Ground for this to work, it doesnt have to have any data on it though.

I rebuilt the surface - it’s just a hot key for me so I didn’t hit the button. You can see it briefly rebuilding on the bottom bar.
I also have several layers categorized to Original Ground. Tried adding the drone surface with nothing on any of the layers and tried it again with adding one line on a categorized layer.
The drone surface I imported is a .TTM, not sure if that’s an issue.
I watched that video from your post before creating this one.
I do this all day long with TTMs and XMLs with zero issue. Exploding them then adding them especially if they’re really dense or huge acreage take forever and just bloats the project.
Wanna send me that surface?
I tried the same surface in another blank project and it seemed to work through adding as a surface member. Not sure what the issue was in my previous project.
Thank you all for the help!
Here is a video that shows how - this has been the case for a number of years Tyler so I dont believe that you have a version where it doesnt work
This was recoirded with the latest version of TBC
Video shows you how
