3D user defined pipe projected Vertical instead of Horizontal

For the current project, I need to create a post with specific criteria to sit on a drilled caisson. The way I have been able to accomplish this is by creating a point and then a manhole under the pipe utility workflow. However, applying the same process to a user defined pipe ( see image below ), it only works if the pipe is in a horizontal direction. It does not work going vertical. Does anyone know of a better workflow?
I have included a few images of the same item to help show what I am trying to accomplish.
