Introducing Smart Suite
The Smart Suite is a subset of RPS All Tools Command Library, and contains our top ~30 commands on a single Smart Suite Menu Ribbon. All of the commands in Smart Suite have been upgraded to include Smart Switch, which allows the ability to toggle quickly between running commands rather than always closing a command before running another command. The Smart Switch control replaces the Close button of the command and pops up a list of all currently running Smart Suite commands. You can also Close or Close All Commands from the Smart Switch list. The Smart Switch can also be activated using the ESC key, the command list then appears right next to your cursor position, eliminating the need for mouse movement over to the command dialog in order to close or open a command. In addition all of the header bar icons also act as Smart Switches between commonly used commands when the command is already open and running.
Smart Switch also eliminates the short lag time between command execution and command opening when running on slower internet connections.
Smart Suite commands also typically have Shortcuts to access different modes / options in the running commands, and will be receiving more command interface improvements over the coming months as we continue to drive usability improvements and optimized work process improvements.
New Commands
New commands this release include the following
Smart Select Command
This new command has been designed to provide faster ways to select TBC objects and Point Cloud data and carry out actions on the data including Relayer, Delete, Create / Add to Point Cloud Region, create cross section lines, create 3D feature lines and more. You can now select by 2 point line, multipoint line, sections from 2 point, multipoint or selected linework, select by circle, select by rectangle, select by polygon using the inside, outside and crossing methods. Cleaning up point clouds to remove vehicles, machines, people, conex boxes, pipe and other commonly encountered objects on construction sites is now extremely fast and simple to execute. Slice through “multi layered point clouds e.g. bridge decks, girders and underpass roads etc.” to isolate important data is a breeze. Selecting TBC objects and relayering or deleting them is as simple as clicking repeated 2 point lines or multipoint lines through the objects. In point clouds, you can extract strips and sections of point cloud data and pull the selected points onto the source lines or source paths that you draw to instantly create 3D lines and cross sections through the point clouds.
Earthworks Polygons Command
The Trimble Earthworks Machine Control system provides the ability to pass shaded 2D polygons to the machines that are then used to render the 3D surface model in the shaded colors of the polygons, allowing the operators to clearly see different areas of the design model that require different operational modes - i.e. different surface offsets, different trench or footing widths, different material grading areas etc. The Earthworks Polygons command converts any closed linestring, polyline, circle, rectangle, boundary or polygon into shaded polygons for this purpose in a single step, allowing you to leverage this feature for the benefit of your machine operators.
Explode Text Command
In the TBC Cross Section conversion workflow, we often encounter cross section offset labels that are written out as a single string of labels vs individual labels, rendering them unusable for the conversion process. This new tool allows you to explode those strings of labels into individual labels in a single step process, enabling their instant usability for the cross section conversion process. This tool eliminates the need to create and copy text manually from section to section, eliminating another laborious and tedious task, and further accelerating the benefit of the cross section conversion process.
Command Changes
In line with the new Smart Suite concept, we are changing the names of two key commands as we move these into the Smart Suite family of high production tools.
Adjust Linestring Elevation = Smart Elevate
As we add more and more elevate tools to the Adjust Linestring Elevation command, it makes sense to change the command name to Smart Elevate as we add the Smart Suite treatment to the command. In this release we have added the following capabilities to Smart Elevate
- Smart Switch - you can now use Smart Switch instead of closing the command to toggle between currently running commands. Smart Switch can be actioned using the Smart Switch button or the ESC key during operation. When you use the ESC key, the Smart Switch control pops up right on your cursor position reducing mouse movement and allowing you to focus on the job in hand.
- Elevate - Contour Mode - the updated Contour mode now includes elevate contours by elevation and elevate contours by crossing. The command now also includes Smart Check - the tool checks the computed intervals of crossing contours to make sure that they are either Major or Minor contour intervals, and fails the elevate request when they don’t match, making it extremely hard to get it wrong, eliminating rework and allowing you to move faster through the data with absolute confidence to get it right first time every time.
- Relayer and Elevate Controls - in all Elevate modes, you can now elect to Relayer and Elevate at the same time, select your target layer and on completion of each line, it will be automatically relayered to your selected target layer - eliminating yet another step from the data prep process.
- Full support for Display in an Alternate Color options in all Elevate modes. You can now set your user preference in RPS Settings - Highlight Colors for how you want to use the display in alternate color options - this includes the ability to use Display Non Zero Elevation lines in an alternate color or Display Zero Elevation lines in an alternate color. The selected mode is automatically activated when you run Smart Elevate and is deactivated when you switch to other commands or close the command on completion of your work.
Takeoff Lines = Smart Draw
As we start to create our Smart Drawing tools, we are keying off the Takeoff Lines command as our start point, so we are starting out by changing the command name to Smart Draw and giving it the Smart Switch treatment. We have added the Track Region command to the header bar commands and added the Smart Switch capability to the command at this stage - watch this space for future enhancements to Smart Draw.
Improved Commands
The following commands have been enhanced in this release
PDF Manager Command
Further improvements to PDF Manager in line with user requests have been made including
- Images can now be dimmed and set to a level of transparency both pre and post georeferencing
- Image initial placement pre georeferencing can now be controlled through the provision of a defined location
- In Alignment and Multipoint Mode you can now select the Mid 2 Point mode for selecting the From / To point locations when using alignment tick marks as the reference controls.
- In the Update Georeference command, you can now process CAD Objects only using the different referencing modes, allowing you to Rotate, Translate and Scale CAD objects into their correct real world positions
- Significant improvements have been made to the text extraction process. The tool now uses Text Font, Text Size and Text Color as separators to isolate text of different types on different layers. Text layers are now placed in their own layer groups.
- The imported files list now uses the image name (not file name) as a reference so that it matches the Georeferenced Image name in the Georeferenced Image list in the view filter manager.
- Line coloring across multiple sheets is now more consistent, providing a better first pass result showing like data on different sheets on the same layers and with the same line colors and lineweights.
- You can now more easily grab images and place them from already georeferenced sheets.
Convert to Linestring Command
The filter line vertices for horizontal and vertical portions of selected lines has been improved, and the vertices reduction is now being reported to the results pane of the command, allowing you to see the effects of the applied filters.
The command has also been added to Smart Suite and now includes the Smart Switch controls.
Smart Edit Command
Smart Edit has been added to Smart Suite and now includes the Smart Switch controls. In addition we have made the following improvements
- Join mode has been improved through the addition of an angle control to the Straightest Join setting. This allows you to control how multiple line segments are selected and joined together, and now makes it possible to extract e.g. Road Alignments and Road Features from Exploded Surface models extremely quickly.
- Join - Overlap Mode has been further enhanced to manage a variety of overlapping line scenarios better. We are still working on this part of the command as we encounter more variations that need to be solved. Please send us any examples that you find where the command fails to work for you.
- Trim / Extend has been enhanced to provide better solutions in certain scenarios.
Edit Alignment As A Spreadsheet Command
Improved warning messages have been provided when incorrect data is supplied to the command and the data causes parser errors - e.g. when you copy PI based alignment data into a Geometry Alignment or vice versa.
Line Marking Manager Command
We have improved the way that Line Marking Manager clears the buffer of previously selected objects that are displaying line markings to provide a cleaner behavior, showing line markings only on selected lines.
Surface to Grid Command
The command has been improved so that it can better handle use cases where no tolerance values are defined, no reference surface is selected or when no output csv file is selected.
Linestring by Station Command
The command has been enhanced so that it can now process both CAD points and Survey Grid or Grid Only points. This helps workflows where CAD points are extracted from Point Clouds, and eliminates the need to first convert the CAD points into Survey Points, eliminating an entire step from the current process.
Label Lines Command
We have updated Label Lines in this package update, the command is still in Pre Release Beta state - we are now moving onto final testing on this command and we hope ton release the full version shortly.
Menu Manager Command
In line with our 2025 changes to no longer support “unlicensed commands” we have added Smart Start to our menus along with Smart Suite.
We are often asked which of our 150 commands people should start to work with, Smart Suite is our top 30 or so commands and they are all laid out on the Smart Suite menu. Smart Suite contains all of the commands that have been given the Smart Suite command treatments - watch this space for the next exciting improvements coming soon.
We have discontinues the Unlicensed Commands menu and have created the new Smart Start Menu. This menu contains all of the commands that are included in the Smart Start Toolbox - these are all of the upgraded versions of the unlicensed tools that were previously available. The upgraded commands have also been supplemented with additional commands like Project Files, Menu Manager, Shortcut Manager, Text Style Manager, Toolbar Manager as well as a number of other commands that we figured fit well with the Smart Start concept. Smart Start also includes basic email and forum support, access to our biweekly training webinars, access to our Libraries and Templates, and our Smart Start Training (TBC Fundamentals) Program on MyRockpile Library.
Upcoming Command Additions
The following commands are in final testing now, and should be released by our Power Users Conference here in Colorado on 11-13 March. These commands include
- RPS Cloud Services
- QA Floors
- Label Lines
- Smart ADA Ramp
- Smart Model
Please keep an eye on TMLStatus as they will be released as they complete testing through TMLStatus. When these are all completed we will release a 2025.2 package update also.
