Nudge Line / Nudge Node Command

D_NudgeLine_600ppi   Nudge

Command Licensing and Default Menu Location

  • The Nudge command is part of the RPS Modeling Toolbox
  • The command is located on the Modeling macros menu ribbon
  • The command is located in the Sections menu group

Command Description

This command provides two main abilities, Nudge Line and Nudge Node.

  • Nudge Line moves a selected line laterally by a defined amount in order to fix a surface model where two lines that define the top and bottom of a vertical wall or face lie on top of each other but separated vertically.
  • Nudge Node is for cross sections where two or more nodes in the cross section lie in the same XY location but are separated vertically.

Command Interface Description

The Nudge command dialog looks as follows

Select line:
For both the Nudge Line and Nudge Node operations you first need to select the source line that you wish to adjust. Select the 3D line that you wish to Nudge.

Show line direction checkbox:
Check this checkbox to show the line direction that you selected. This assists you to determine whether you want to nudge the line Left or Right in relation to it’s current position.

Move entire line mode

Select this mode if you want to nudge the entire line left or right. This mode is useful for retaining walls or footing excavations where the top and bottom of the wall are in the same XY location but are separated vertically

Nudge direction:
Choose Left or Right from the pull down list or click to the left or right side of the line in the plan view.

At the bottom of the dialog you can set the Nudge amount. Typically this would be e.g. 0.01’ or 0.001m, but you can set it to whatever value you require. The input is a slide bar, the slider shows the current value setting.

Tap Apply or Enter to execute the nudge process. Note that if the line is already included in a surface model, that was showing flags, the surface is now updated and should have eliminated the flags. If the nudge amount was insufficient you can nudge again and again until the surface flags are fixed.

Move selected nodes mode

Select this mode if you want to nudge nodes on the line forwards, backwards or at a specified bearing to fix flags in a surface model. This mode is useful for cross sections that contain retaining walls or footing excavations where the top and bottom of the wall are in the same XY location but are separated vertically. The solution to the problem is to move nodes forwards or backwards, and in some cases at a bearing to the line in order to solve the problem. The Nudge Nodes command analyzes the selected line, determines which nodes need to be adjusted and then allows you to move them in the appropriate direction (typically forwards or backwards) along the line in an automated way.

For vertical segments, automatically select:
Choose whether you want to move the lower or upper node of a pair of nodes that are vertically separated. Typically choose one and always use that approach so that you know which ones you adjust. I always adjust the lower line or the lower node, unless for some reason I have to change because of the geometry of the lines.

Once you have selected the line, and selected the nodes that you wish to adjust (Upper or Lower), the line is analyzed and all nodes are listed in the Nodes (by distance along the line) area of the dialog. The selected nodes for adjustment are highlighted and an indication as to whether those nodes will be moved forwards or backwards will be shown. While you can override the software, in 99% of cases you will never need to do so.

If you wish to override what the software decides, you can check the checkbox beside a node in the list and then define what you want to do to that node in terms of movement by selection one of the radio buttons below (Backward, Forward, Left or Right). If none of those options are suitable you can select Specify direction and enter your own direction as a whole circle bearing.

The Nudge amount control is the same as for Nudge Line. Use the slide bar to select the nudge amount required. Typically 0.01’ or 0.001m is sufficient. If the first nudge fails to fix the surface flags, you can nudge again and again until the flags are fixed.

Apply
When you tap apply, the lines or nodes will be nudged and the command will ready itself for another selection set and repeat process execution. If you do not want to make a second selection and repeat the process tap Close to finish the process.

Close
Closes the command without further execution.
