Intel's 2024 CPU release announcement (Arrow Lake)

Intel has announced their next generation of CPUs called (Arrow Lake)

Release Date 10/24/24

I will be providing some observations and useful links around this announcement in this thread.

  • These CPU’s are undergoing a SKU realignment moving from the i9-,i7-,i5- branding to a Ultra branding. Intel Core Ultra 9 Processor 285K would be this generations equivalent to the 14900k from last year.

  • This generation adds NPUs to their desktop CPUs which are Neural Processor Units. The Intel NPU is an AI accelerator used for AI computation.

  • This generation will be using an new Z890 chipset with a new secondary retention mechanism I think this will be optionally available on motherboards.

  • Reduced power consumption

  • New core layout that should/may help with thermal dissipation

  • DDR5-6400 support

These observation are based on intel’s press release and I would recommend verifying these claims through 3rd party reviews of the CPUs once those become available. ( I will add those to this thread when the time comes)

Hopefully its an actual iterative improvement over the 14th “gen” (if you can call it that) chips that are more like space heaters than CPUs. 2-3% gains over the prior gen with 10-20% increase in power consumption felt like a huge waste of time between the 13/14 gen. Pretty flabbergasted to see the power draw difference from the 12 to 13th gen and again at the 14th gen.

Thoughts @Shane_Odenbach ?

From the documentation provided by Intel the there seems to be a lateral move in performance but they are claiming a much lower power consumption and thermal dissipation due to a wider casting. They also ditched hyperthreading which should help on the power/heat side of things. Hard to say if it’s true until 3rd party testing is done and released. I will update the post with some links and thoughts once reviews are in the wild.

Nexus gamers on youtube has a pretty indepth review of the 12/13/14 gen and their power consumption spike between the three gens if you havent seen it.
