How to create line labels that display % slope instead of ratio

I just started learning to create line labels. I have a bunch of 3D linestrings that are part of my storm sewer system. I don’t think the crew will be able to use 3D excavator in some areas so I want to have the line length display on top of the line and line slope underneath. In the preview my slope shows up as a % but when I click a line it labels as a ratio. I have gotten % slope labels using smart text
@<L,L,P>@
@<OD,L,S%>@
but its a lot slower. I’m not sure if I can save a “smart text” label as a label style in my manager. I like the speed of clicking line label tab and being able to select multiple lines and not need to manually set the label alignment. I have tried the “User defined Attributes” and adding smart text to the label text box.
I also went into my project settings and changed it to slope ( attachment shows this) Its probably something simple, I just cant figure it out.

I realized that bumping the settings to 100 was what I needed. The line I started with was 10.1%. The default setting to display as a slope ratio instead of a % was 10. I went down to 0.1 when I should have gone up.

The issue is that you have got your % to Ratio limit set to 0.1% that means that anything greater than 0.1% will be labeled as a Ratio. Set that value to eg 10% in project settings and the labels will stay as a slope up to 10% and then switch to a ratio. If you always want them as a % then change the value to 100% for example and that will go up to 45 degrees / 1:1 before it changes to a Ratio.

We also have a label slope command coming out shortly that places an arrow and the Slope and Slope or Horiz or Vertical Distance and the bearing as options.

Pick one end and the other end of the line or two points on a surface and it draws the arrow in downhill direction and labels the arrow with your selected values. Will be out in October

I have had to go this route before. Using the measure command to get the SLOPE. Which I have not tried to export. The bad is if you can’t export. There is no way of exploding the measurement.

If this new command functions smoothly as promised, @alan.sharp and team just might be my new favorite person! :grinning:

Will this be part of a paid RPS toolbox or free? I am trying to get my company to see the value of paying a separate fee for some of RPS tools.

The owners complaint is that Trimble already nickels and dimes him for everything already. We recently got into GPS and as a smaller company, it has been a great production boost but the costs are still greatly outweighing the price to pay a local surveyor to stake the job out.

We paid the initial cost for the newest gen D4 CAT dozer with the CAT grade/ Trimble earthworks already integrated. I think what put him over the edge was paying for the initial purchase cost, plus the monthly fee one of the operators tried to use the auto steer that’s in all of CAT commercials. Shows selecting a line and the dozer steers itself, latched on the line. My operator cant get it to work. After a bit of back and forth with the Sitech field guy, he thinks we need to buy another additional SAE license to unlock the autosteer.

Sorry that was a really long rant that didn’t have anything to do with this awesome feature you hinted of. All that to say, after convincing him to get me my own TBC subscription so I wasn’t sharing a network license with 1 other, plus new data collector, 2 base stations, and works manager… I think he would kill me if I said, what about 1 more yearly add on cost boss… fingers crossed this is free tool?

Not a free tool unfortunately - we also have to make a living! Totally understand the costs etc. That really is nothing to do with us.

TBC is a great platform and is even better with our tools, that is all I can say - we already do a lot for free and we do have to draw a line somewhere.

Apologies if that creates you a headache!

@Jonathan_Radke, my company took the leap into machine control several years ago when they were small and GPS was expensive, and it didn’t pencil out at the time. I feel your pain on the expense factor, but when compared to the productivity benefits and the catalyst for growth it provides, it is totally worth it in the long run.

Absolutely nothing to do with you guys, I just joined this community and you guys have been very responsive and gave answers 100x better than Chat GPT ever could. I greatly appreciate it. I don’t want to come across as complaining, I apologize that it came across like that. This seems to be the most active community and easier to navigate than Trimble’s.

We try to assist people for sure Jonathan
