Creating a Background Image for Siteworks

This question comes up quite a bit - how to create background images for Siteworks and how to load them into the device.

In the video example below, we show the following, starting out from an imported PDF page and georeferencing it for a Site project, and then extracting the linework from the PDF and using that to create a Jobsite and a Design for Siteworks (not a normal workflow to use the PDF lines for a Design (normally you would use the CAD data for that)) but still the process is the same.

Once the PDF page is placed and scaled, we do the following

  • Use the Plotbox command to create a plotbox that surrounds the area for the image required for the field. This can cover one or more sheets of PDF. The challenge here is sizing it to suit the limitations of the images in Siteworks. The video shows use of a calc spreadsheet that we put together that aids this process.

  • Use the Capture Image command to capture the image area inside the Plotbox at the desired resolution.
  • Use the Field Data workflows to create the Jobsite and Jobsite Design for Siteworks
  • Create the Background Images folder in the Jobsite Folder for the device
  • Copy the captured image above to the Background Images folder for the Jobsite

Note: JPG files may be better than PNG or TIF files because they do not have transparency so you will get a crisper looking image in Siteworks. TIF and PNG files have transparency but that can make the background image look more grainy on the device. Either method works, pick your preferred method.

The video also shows how to open the Jobsite and use the Settings function / Images to load the image in background.
