Project Cleanup Tips and Tricks

Delete Duplicate Lines

If two lines e.g. parts of a finished grade or subgrade surface in imported cross sections are identical in position, elevation, slope etc. then the Delete Duplicate lines will find and delete one of the two lines. If however one has elevation undefined and the other has elevation 0.00 as is common on imported CAD data, then this process will not work.

Tip: Always set imported CAD cross section or other CAD linework with elevation 0.00 to elevation undefined unless you know that you are working with data at sea level where elevation 0.00 may be real.

Overlapping Line Loops

What is an overlapping line loop? This is where a line double backs on itself i.e. you draw a line between nodes 1,2,3,4,5 and then continue it from 5 back to 4 to 3 to 2. The sections of the line from 5 back to 2 are overlapping line loops. The Project Cleanup tool currently will only remove one segment of the line each process you execute. It also seems to not clean up the last “loop” that from 5 to 4.

I have reported this in as an issue.

Filter Line Vertices

A great tool for eliminating excess vertices on lines e.g to reduce contours down to something more manageable for surface modeling or for cross section lines - if you use the Track Top or Track Bottom command it sometimes will create e.g. multiple nodes on the subgrade edges on the “vertical wall” of the subgrade edge - you can remove all of these with a very small filer setting e.g. 0.001’ and that will make your life easier when you have flipped the sections to 3D as Stored Sections or as CAD linework when you start to model the data.
